my parents said if i get good grades i would get a 100 gallon fish tank:eek3: any suggestions

Smaller cichlids make for good display.

do a bunch of smaller schooling fish like tetras and neons and guppies???

Get a net. The canals in south Florida are teeming with exotic cichlids, plecos, and other released aquarium fishes. The less-impacted areas have many beautiful native fishes. If I were you I would set up a sand-bottomed planted tank with native schoolers such as:

KILLIFISH

Fundulus chrysotus- Golden Topminnow
F. rubrifrons- Redfaced Topminnow
Lucania goodei- Bluefin Killifish
L. parva- Rainwater Killifish

LIVEBEARERS

Heterandria formosa- Pygmy Livebearer (AKA "Least Killifish")
Poecilia latipinna- Sailfin Molly

Then add some bottom-dwellers:

CATFISH

Noturus gyrinus- Tadpole Madtom

A pair or trio of specimen fish:

SUNFISH

Enneacanthus chaetodon- Blackbanded Sunfish
E. gloriosus- Bluespotted Sunfish
E. obesus- Banded Sunfish

And some inverts:

Palaemonetes paludosus- Grass Shrimp
Pomacea paludosa- Florida Apple Snail
Physella or Physa species- Pond Snails

There are many fish an inexperienced person could keep in a 100. Tiger Barbs are very hard and active. The go well with Serpae Tetras and BlackSkirt Tetras.

For cichlids, almost any CA/SA would work with a few exceptions. If you wanted to do Oscars -- You just need to keep the tank clean, aggressive water changes, and good quality food (Such as Hikari Cichlid Gold or similar). If you start with a juvenile with some convicts you will have an active tank and a fish that you will have for many many years.(10 or more years).
