Im thinking about transforming my current 10G around, currently home to 2 bettas, 2 small plants and a lot of small ornaments. literally sheets of algae (almost seaweed like) cover the back of the tank. water is never clear, even with water changes. but my betta have been fat and happy for more than a year now. and it looks very empty and dull with just those two.

my first idea was to get 2 more bettas for a total of 4 using 3 dividers (2.5 gallons a section). but then i kind of like the idea of 2 dividers, 3.3 gallons, and 3 bettas with shrimp and snails in each section. if you think i can pull off 4 bettas and snail/shrimp, then please do tell.

also, i'll be using sand for the first time in this tank.

why dont you just leave the two bettas and put shrimp or a mystery snail in thier compartments?what kind of filter do you have, and how often are your water changes? thanks

i actually don't have a filter for my betta tank, as i rely on 2 PWC's that amount to at least 3-4G's a week. pH is 7.0, ammonia and nitrites 0, and nitrates 5. i just never got around to getting a filter for the betta tank. i tried a bubble wand and sponge filter but my bettas did not enjoy the water currents on the surface even as i tried to minimize it. so i just took them off.

i've seen my bettas jump at my finger, and they probably get only half their body out of the water, as their fins are pretty heavy and wavy. thats not to say im not concerned about their safety, but would really like to have 3 bettas instead of just 2. the tank is never filled to the brim, always at least 1.5-2 inches of divider exposed.

also, this would give me the opprotunity to clear up the water and replace my substrate with sand and add in new plants.

I'd opt for the 2 dividers and 3 bettas rather than the 3/4 set up. I have a 10 gallon and looking at the dimensions of it, then picturing 3 dividers, just seems like it would be a little cramped looking. Not saying that I don't think your bettas would hate having 2.5 gals to themselves, in fact one of my bettas is in a 2.5g tank and happy as can be. Just the dimensions of the space, to me, seems a bit awkward. I've never actually seen a 10g divided more than two times...If you could post a pic?

your bettas have gotten used to having more room,i wouldnt make thier area smaller, just my opinion, you would need some kind of filter if you were to have snails(they put off alot of waste)and shrimp are sensitive to water condtions.

i'd recommend a trickle filter/wet-dry if you dont want to worry much about water current.
