We started my son's 10g tank on Nov 9, 2006 by a squeze and gravel from an established tank. For a while it was progressing nicely. We would dose 2-3ppm ammonia and by the next day would be gone. Nitrite's spiked off the chart. Nitrates peaked around 40 ppm.

For the last couple of weeks now it takes several days for 3ppm ammonia to get back to zero. Nitrites are holding pretty steady at .5 ppm. Nitrates at 10ppm. I put in several plastic plants from the established tank hoping it would move things along but no luck.

Any suggestions? Testing with an API Master Test Kit.

Thanks!

I tested again today. It's been 5 days since I dosed with amonia.

amonia 1ppm
Nitrite .25 ppm
Nitrate 40 ppm

Anyone?

Sounds like it is still cycling. Try adding more ammonia to move things along again.

try the product bio-spiria, its a chemical that has actual benificial bacteria inside. OR stop the amonia adding, and then add a hardy fish or two. A female betta... a giant danio... two or three platys... ect. Adding fish is a great way to keep it going. If you are brave you can even go ahead and add all your fish before its done cycling.... but thats a very advanced situation, lots of chemistry/water changes.... takes alot of time out of your day, and its like playing with fire. .... Dont try that. just let the aquarium sit for a while... Oh and is the aquarium in any direct sunlight durring the day??? could have spiked do to the fact that sunlight could have been baking your tank, and then the next day or somethign you could have had inclement weather that blocked the direct sunlight.

It does not get any direct sunlight.

Today's test results:

Ammonia: 1ppm
Nitrites: .5ppm
Nitrates: 10ppm

I'm going to give it a couple of more days and see what happens.
