I was thinking of putting plants in my 10g tank, and having a small school of neons. How many neons do you guys suggest? And do you guys think i should have any other fish in there with them?

I personally like Danios better than Neons but whatever you like. 
With either of these fish, I would have a scoal of 8-10 and maybe include one snail in the tank. As you probably know, some snails don't really munch on plants, unless they are decaying. I wouldn't include anything else in this tank, but would focus most of my energy into making a spectacular tank filled with plants.

I agree 8-10 neon would be great. And a snail will be great for keeping this clean with adding a lot to the bioload. Most likely you will get free snails on your plants.

i agree with the amount of neons, they shoul look great in a 10g, if you were goin to plant the tank you might wanna skip the snail they will munch on plants, especially if you accidentally get snails from the fish store, if you want something else interseting to go with your neons and helps to cleasn the tank maybe a couple of cories woul be nice , although they wont eat algae theyll eat the left overs that fall to the floor, but i woul skip the snails, one suggestion is if you get plants from yuor pet store wash them with tap water, you'll be surprised how many little baby snails you wash out, you dont want these in your tank, they will wreak havock on your plants - just read other peoples posts-

I personally like having snails in my tank. Occasionally I crush one for the cories but I think they are great. Their ability to munch on my plants doesn't seem to be as great as the plants ability to grow so it all works out great.
But if you hate snails then by all means wash them out well.

I like snails too! They really balence any aquarium out nicely. I haven't found any that really kill my plants...not if you have healthy ones...man, I am cutting all my plants down bi-weekly even WITH the snails!

Thanks for your replys, sorry i havent responded for a while, i lost track of the thread. But right now in the tank there is incandecent lighting. But I would but 2 of thoes compact flourecent bulbs from home depot, would that work? Also what kind of substrate should I use, and what kind of snails?

My 10 gallon uses those screw in flourescent bulbs and they do fine for plants that like low to moderate light. Not as great for plants that really like a heavy does of UV but not too bad. My tank grows - java fern, amazon sword, water sprite, a floating lily pad type plant, and some fox tail (Which normally like high light so it is surviving but not taking off).
I would suggest Ram's Horn snails. They tend to eat a lot of left over food on the bottom, some algea and decaying plants the most. They tend to leave healthy plants alone. Also Trumpet Snails are great if you have plants as they spend most of their time in the substrate burrowing around. Good for brining nutrients to the plant roots.
