The tank size is fine. I only exercise caution with female bettas. One can be surprised at how aggressive they can be.

I have seen them flare at each other and even go at each other like male bettas would.

I have several females that will flare as much as their male counterparts. I've even had a few that I couldn't spawn because they simply refused to submit to the male. I remember one particular female that would do nothing but have flaring contests with the male in the spawning tank (she was in a glass tube that was in the tank he was in, so no damage occured)
