I'm almost done the cycle on my 10 gallon and would like to go get my fish sometime next week (*finally* ). I was hoping I could get some opinions on what kind of fish would do well in the tank. I considered an ocellaris clownfish OR a tomato clownfish. At one point I considered a royal gamma. What I really wanted was a firefish. I read they would be ok in a 10 gallon but my lfs told me today they wouldn't do well. He suggested a clownfish and a pygmy angel (it was called royal blue angel in the store).
I'm just getting confused about what would do well in this size tank and would appreciate any suggestions. I'm basically open to anything. The tank will have live rock but no corals. I'll also have a few hermit crabs and a skunk shrimp

I'm a newbie too (but one who is doing a lot of research and reading), so definately wait for a more advanced user to comment. My research suggests the pigmy angel, although small, would prefer a tank of 30+ gallons (the same goes for most dwarf angels). Everything I've seen says the firefish can handle, and thrive, in a 10 gallon tank. The only concern is that you have an adequite lid/cover as they are jumpers. If you were going to put a second fish in, I would suggest a similarly small, Peaceful, tank mate.

Again, I'm brand new to the hobby, so a more experienced aquarist will likely be able to give you a better assessment.

Aristotle is 100% correct! I'd go with either the firefish or the clown. You might be able to get one more very small fish in the tank like a ranfordi goby ," no idea how to spell that,". Do keep in mind though if you go for the tomato they can be rather aggresive.

It's a rainford's goby I believe also know as a court jester goby that would be a good choice. The firefish would be fine, you may think of going with a clown goby to go with it or maybe an neon goby.

I would definately love to get a fire fish if possible. My only concern with the idea of getting a goby is that all the websites say they like to burrow in the sand and I have dolomite and crushed coral as my substrate. Is there anything else I could put that would be compatible with the firefish?

my son has a purple firefish and a clarkii clown in his 10 gallon-so far, so good. Biggest problem is topping off-boy does the water go down!!!!

They get along fine but Im sure it varies with personality. I would try to pick a firefish that isnt hiding all the time in the LFS. Of course thats hard since they all hide when the net comes in ;)

Likewise, a clown that DOES hide might make for a good combo

court jester gobies aren't a sand burrowing species

they will pic through the substrate but they spend a lot of time swimming. A beautiful fish.

The clown gobies also spend a lot of time hanging out on live rock
