10g - When is it considered overstocked?

I have my mollies in tanks without salt and they do fine. Others, as you've read, put salt in their tanks because they feel mollies do better in it. Mollies, like many common fish you see in petstores, have been commercially bred in pure freshwater for so many generations that they've adapted well to freshwater only conditions. So really, it's up to you if you want to add salt or not. It's just the way the hobby is, there's a plethora of information out there that are sometimes even contradictory. In time you'll have enough experience to know what works for you and the fish you keep.

A lot of the confusion also stems from the fact that aquarium salt and marine salt not being the same thing...you wont create brackish/marine conditions with aquarium salt (NaCl). Personally, I never will use salt unless treating Ich. Otherwise IMHO it is a waste of money.

Considering the Salt I purchased was $1.03, the money isn't a terrible waste. The salt I used is marine salt.
I know this thread is sorta going off topic...
But what do you guys personally do to battle ich? I keep reading that this will happen at one point or another and is inevitable. They say raising the temp to 88f and salt helps without using the treatment. What do you guys do?

Then you certainly do NOT want to use that salt with corys.

I've never had ich in any tank and I sometimes do not even QT, so I wouldn't say it is inevitable. From my understanding heat + salt is the most tested method, although I'm not a fan of adding chemicals (meds) unless I absolutely have to...

I used the API Master Test kit for Salt-water as I was told this is one of the more accurate test kits and I am going the salt-water route, and I'm not a fan of test strips.

The API test kits for Ammonia (NH3), Nitrates (NO3), & Nitrites (NO2) are interchangeable for fresh & salt water (should say so right on the box).

Ok, now I'm very confused. I was told by several people that salt would benefit the Mollies, my primary fish... I have salt in the water (2 tbls, 1 per 5g).
I have added ammonia 2 weeks ago to see if it would cycle out, now I'm at 0ppm meaning it's working, no?

Like others have already stated, you don't need to add any kind of salt (be it aquarium salt, table salt, marine salt etc) for fresh water fish. Keep things simple for now & don't add any salt to your tank.

Ich is very common if not the most common disease fish keepers might encounter.
There are a lot of opinions about the best method for treating Ich. I used to subscribe to the "salt & heat" method until I solicited others opinions on their preferred method for treating Ich in this thread http://www.aquariacentral.com/forum...What-is-your-preferred-method-of-treating-Ich
As a result I'm not as reluctant to use some of the meds that are out there as I used to be.

Hope this helps.
