Do you know how to tell the genders apart? Males have a pointy anal fin (sometimes it will be folded, so watch for awhile), females are more rounded there. If you wound up with a m/f pair, watch out, for fry are practically inevitable! Matter of fact, even if they are two females, they may still be pregnant if they were in a mixed sex tank at the LFS. Just so you know!

yes, it's pretty easy to tell. the females have a true anal fin behind the paired pelvic fins (i.e. "normal") whereas the males have a modified anal fin that looks more like a tube. it's called a gonopodium and is used to transfer sperm into the female during mating. I call it the "penis fin" :)

like TheZoo said, if they were mixed with boys at the store, they have a pretty good chance of being pregnant. Also, livebearers (like mollies, platies, guppies, many others) can store sperm for months or even longer. That means that the girls can get pregnant, have the babies, and use their sperm reserves to get pregnant again without the need to mate again!

That's why I don't even bother with female livebearers. I've only had 3 livebearers, and they were all male. Many people also just let them have the babies and the other fish (including the mom) will eat them.

My LFS said that they are both females. I found some rocks in Lake Michigan and I kinda made a cave with them that 1 fish seems to love. Also one of my fish has a HUGE stomach. I think she is ready to lay eggs any day.

hey when i was asking similar questions about my 13g i was suggested that i get dwarf gourami because they are small and hardy, not to mention they are pretty good looking. (i still havent gotten round to buying them because a) i need more money , they cost $12.50 here in australia, and b) i havent decided whether to get males or females) would you advise against getting 4 male DG for my 13g??
