10gallon lightig confusion

Well I dropped by my lfs to pick up a few fish for my other tank and bought a 10g tank kit put together by tetra I thinl i has a 18w bulb in the hood is this going to be ok for most stuff? it came with the filter hood and light I paid 50 did I get ripped off? or was it an average price Thanks..

I have 40w dual daylight over my 10gallon, it's way too much in my opinion. I wish I had a lower wattage. it's a current usa fixture

If the ole' wpg rule applied to a 10g, it'd be 4wpg. If the rule applied, it would definitely be "high lighting" but since we know it doesn't, it's probably a good start. As far as the brightness, unfortunately, just something to deal with.

Is there a replacement light that has two lights in it similiar to the one that came with my tank. That I can pop ontop of my hood or do I need a new hood I feel I may not have enough light only being 18w or so. Were can I get this? prefer online thanks.

18 watts over a 10 gal is low light, 40 watts is high light about 3 wpg. The lumens sq in is much better than the wpg rule.

it came with a flouresecent what low light plants can I keep healty in it I have eco complete substrate Thanks

im confused. we have many compact flouresents throughout our home and the wattage that they use is between 13 and 23 watts. but the output on the 13 watter is 60 watts. so if i had a cf Using 13 watts, but Outputting 60 watts, wouldnt that be like 6 wpg on a ten gallon? just because they use 13 watts doesnt mean that their output is equal to that does it? thanks.
