Hi, I've just inherited a 150W Metal Halide fixture and suspended it from the roof over a spare 120L tank.

Not knowing much about Kelvin and such, I took the old lamp from it to a store, and had them order in a replacement. It took 2 weeks to arrive as a special order. It turns out to be a 10,000K temp.

Yesterday I read that you shouldn't use anything above 6,000K since only algae will will proliferate from the higher temp.
Another article said that aquatic plants use light temp up to 8,000K which sort ot makes it ok!?

Seeing that they specially ordered it in, I may have trouble returning it for the 5,400K version.

From your experiences, is the 10k-K ok to use?

You have a good bulb for a reef tank For fw plants tanks lower K is better. On my tanks I have bulbs that range from 4400k to 6700k. I suggest if you cant return it, you list it on Aquabid or Ebay and sell it and then replace it with a more appropriate bulb.

Also, next time post the question before you order, it will make life easier.

Welcome to AC !

Bass,
Look for a 'full spectrum' bulb..
6500K (Kelvin) is a good bulb.

Thanks for that! The guy who sold it was not at the shop today, so I'll ask tomorrow.

Nice looking tank, Joe! I keep Discus also, in bare-bottom though. I have 2 Pigeon bloods, 2 Spotted Cherry Leopards and 2 Silver Snakeskins. All of them have grown to good 5-6” adults... no babes yet.
