Ok, due to lack of a truly decent satlwater aquaria store in this area I have decided to turn my newly aquired 110 gallon aquarium into a freshwater tank.
Now tricky part is, what kind of fish to get? I would like a decent variety of color/shapes. Preferably larger more personable fish as opposed to a lot of small shy shooling fish.
Any ideas? I was thinking of cichlids, oscars, catfish, or maybe even a river/pond setup with some local fish from my area. (like perch, brook trout, pumpkinseeds, crayfish, frogs, or hornpout.)
Or I could go with an indoor goldfish pond.
Desisions, desisions, desisions. I want it to look good and natural. It will be taking the place of my SW tank (which I will be moving to the bedroom) and will be the center of attention in my living room.
I would LOVE ideas and any input that anyone would have.

If you want it to look natural, choose a specific habitat and mimic it, in decor as well as flora/fauna.

If you're having trouble finding a naturally occuring combination of fishes that appeal to you, then go with the "Florida Canal" biotope ;)

ATTACK OF THE DWARF CICHLIDS!!!!
heh, that'd be fun. But as I am thinking of it more I do like the idea of an aquarium of fish from my area. i think that would be neat. Besides, with a fishing license they would be free, and later on if they get too big....BBQ!!

I am still considering a pair of dwarf lions for my 55 SW, and maybe a snowflake eel.

A nice shoal of rainbowfish would look great in a tank that size. Some loaches or corys for the bottom. Maybe a small group of otos and a single gourami for a showfish. You've got a lot of options. An angelfish tank would be pretty neat too.

So many choices, so many beautiful fish!!! CAN'T DECIDE!!

I, in the way of "personable" and "beautiful" fish, suggest a community incorporating bichirs (Polypterus spp.), rocket gar (Ctenolucius hujeta), true knifefish (e.g., Gymnotus spp.), and assorted "oddball" characins (as red-tailed Chalceus), to name a few. Pictures to come.

I'm thinking that either way it's probably gonna be mostly a predator setup. My LFS doesn't have much of those oddball guys that I've seen. Only very rarley do they have something unique like that. It'll still be a little while before I can get a stand and filter(s) for it. Until then I get to dream/research/plan on what I want.
