112G Planted Show Tank Journal!!!

I searched it up and found the specific problems I see in my tanks are due to lack of Calcium...I will research a bit more and then start DIY ferts I think...I have been dosing TPN for the past 2 days to help them recover...I can't do that much longer as it is like $1 a day to dose that for this big of a tank...

So you havent been dosing except for the past two days? Also, it says with Seachem Flourish also. What are you dosing with now, I mean specifics? Like Seachem or previously bought water down ferts that are premixed? If so, you are paying for mainly RO water and you should buy the dry ferts and make the mixes yourself. It is way cheaper and it would only cost you 30$ a year for all the ferts to maintain a 120 gallon tank. I bought mine from GLA http://greenleafaquariums.com/aquarium-fertilizers-supplements/pps-pro-fertilizer-package.html exactly what I bought when they didnt have this package available and I paid for the bottles ontop of that!

Pardon me while I catch up and excuse me if I miss something. :)

Wow, that's quite an equipment list! I like the stock list but vote for more cories. :)

Floating Wisteria is just wisteria floating instead of planted so you can use your rooted stuff. Maybe look at other floater options too. With high light red root floaters would look great.

Did you get your bubble counter issue resolved? New timer?

Is the crypt that is suffering newly planted or moved? Is it the only one suffering? Could be Crypt melt, which is totally normal.

Do you have a drop checker for the CO2? Are you dosing anything (besides the past few days)? If not I recommend dry dosing too, it is the only choice with a tank this size. And most importantly, what are the dimensions of the tank? Love it's shape, long and wide but not too tall! :D

I'd like to see some closer shots of the tank, it feels so far away and I like to have my face against the glass! :grinyes:

I will reply to the earlier posts when I get on my laptop
Here r some pics
I got new plants and also wanna show off the rotala growth haha

I'm currently using Seachem Flourish Excel...thanks for the link! so it'll last me a year?!?!?

Same! I want more cories too haha! At least 4 more!
I already have some red root floaters!:) Great minds think alike lol!
Yea, the bubble counter issue was resolved, it just looked weird at the angle I was viewing it at! The timer wasn't broken, it was just extremely weird and awkward...when the icon on the manual side switch showed on, it was actually on the timer, and when it showed the timer icon, it was actually always on...so it works now!

The crypts are pontedrifolia and they were doing GREAT before CO2...I had had them in the tanks for a month before Co2 and they were bright green and doing great! Now they are curling up and losing color:( I thought it was melt after adding CO2 but it isn't:(

I don't have a drop checker yet, GLA has been out of stock for the one I want (it looks cool and I'm all about looks haha)...I'm gonna start dry dosing whenever I order the GLA package James gave me the link to!

Dimensions are 60"(l)X18"(d)X24"(h)
I love the size too!:) Perfect in my living room! It is longer than my 72G, 2" deeper(kind of hard to get into for planting, but it's okay), and much wider which I like as it gives me more space to scape and plant!

I posted a few iphone5 shots, but I know what you mean! When I do the final planting which is scheduled for June 30th, I will use my DSLR for at least 25 pics for you guys!

And I have decided to keep this DW as I could not find any others...

I am gone June 25th to June 30th and then July 1st to July 7th so I will only update future plants/stock and the fert situation!

I also changed my Co2 output setting

it was currently on 9 hours with my lighting which is on 10
i made it 6 hours...i hope it helps!

Excel is only a carbon source (which you have with your co2) you need the other nutrients parrottbay linked too. If you are not dosing anything else then your tank currently has nearly no nutrients in the water column which you definitely need. Look into different dosing methods, EI, PMDD, PPS-Pro etc and find which one works for you.

Crypts - They may just be adjusting to the change in CO2. You don't want to change too many things at once and CO2 is a big change for a plant that takes forever to get comfy. I would not turn the CO2 down (another change). Do you have it come on before the lights come on and go off before the lights go off, like an hour or more? Although crypts are root feeders...I actually just moved my pontedrilfolia and it had 2 itty bitty roots so I wonder if it could be upset at the lack of water column ferts?????

That is such a great tank size, a little tall for working in though. I really want a 5ft tank! :D

You can get the dry method on that link also, I think I sent you the PPS Pro method. Also, GLA will help you extremely with dosing and answering questions. Also, the curling of plant leaves is a sign of a nutrient deficiency. Excel is just another form of carbon, and REALLY you shouldn’t need to dose it especially since you are using pressurized co2. From reading, it is a must to have and dose from occasions and to use as an algae killer especially Black Beard Algae. Yes, the link I sent you should last a year on a 125 gallon but it all depends on how much you dose etc. I just had a real good experience from them after I had problems with my tank and they answer my emails politely and professionally. If you are going to do the dry method I would use their dry method one http://greenleafaquariums.com/aquarium-fertilizers-supplements/micro-macro-fertilizers.html either way you go, I don’t think you will go wrong. One lesson I have learned is that not enough ferts is worse than too much ferts. I am not a pro at this but I am always willing to help!

From everything I've read so far, your use of Flourish Excel is unnecessary. I know this echoes what a few have said lately, but sometimes the quantity validates the claim. I choose to use Excel because I do not have any desire to put in pressurized CO2. I don't disagree that dry ferts are probably better long term, and I certainly may look into it....but so far, as I'm still new to this planted aquarium process, my method is clearly working (in combo with Flourish root tabs and 50% weekly water changes).
