12 Volt Man's New Fishroom Thread

Have you noticed a big growth rate difference with this batch and your last batch (from your previous tank)? These guys seem to have gotten so big so fast.

hard to say because with the last batch I wasnt paying as much attention. they were in a 65g underneath my 90 for the first year I had them, and I didn't really realize how big they really were until I moved them up into the 90. by that point they were about 14" or so give or take. too big for the 65 by that point.

I have a feeling the rate would have been fairly similar though. I just didnt have pics etc. to document it as easily.

reflecting on the setup, I am pretty happy with everything in terms of hardware.

I am happy with the Aqueon tank with the black silicone, I think it is about as well built as I have seen in terms of construction/silicone work, the heating/filtration is working perfectly, I like the lighting, black gravel with black background etc.

in terms of tank size, well, I think realistically its about as big as I could have put in that room without taking up too much floorspace. Yes, the extra width of the 220 or even 180 would have been nice, but looking at the tank in the room, I really think that taking up even more floor space would not be good. I definately like the 72x29.5" viewing area, it is awesome to sit down in front of..so in a way, that would rule out the 180 for me anyway..chopping 6 inches of the top would not look nearly as good in that space IMO, even if it was wider..

I am a little dissapointed in the fin nipping -whichever fish are doing it. it sucks because the last barbs I had were in virtually perfect condition. these barbs and redhooks are not because of this, but, this is a hobby and nothing is ever perfect. esp. with livestock..

the best I can do right now is compare shots of the barbs in january.

keep in mind the tank is 72" long.

they are by no means huge yet, but are getting there..

They look pretty huge to me! I guess this is why you always check how big your fish get before you buy them...are you still going to only keep two of them? You mentioned that a while back.

As you can probably tell from my post up above, the tattered fins and missing scales is bothering me. I am actually thinking of putting slightly different stock in the tank. rather than have the redhooks and lemon fins, I am thinking of going a different route:

4 red tinfoil barbs
5 or 6 filamentosa barbs
I can probably try and put the clowns back in
a trio of severums
perhaps some bala sharks (growing up some monster balas in that tank would look pretty sharp I think)

this might not be a popular decision..lol but I might take the plunge..

this tank takes up a whole wall, and I guess I just dont want it full of fish that are in rough condition...

small update. the redhooks are going to the LFS tomorrow, not sure what I am doing with the barbs just yet. its a shame that these fish chewed each other up, but what can you do. you can see just how badly some of these fish are nipped.

they are healthy, eating and growing, but all chewed up...:(

I have a feeling its the redhooks all along, since the barbs lack the mouth/teeth to cause these sorts of problems..

its just odd that in all the times I have spent sitting in front of the tank over the last 7 months (too much? LOL) I never saw any sign of aggression.

but the evidence is everywhere:

wow! that is some serious nippage. I love red hooks too, sorry they have been problematic. I hope your new stocking plan works out for you.
