I am looking at either a 125(72x18x22), a 150(72x18x28) or 180(72x24x24)
to house African Haps and Peacocks....

Obviously, the 180g would be the best, but the depth is an issue, and the 150 resolves the depth, but it appears a little high.

Ideally, I would like a 72x18x24 tank, but that's not a standard size.

Any thoughts? Everyone says that the 180 is an awesome tank if you have the space, but I'm afraid that anything over a 125 would be overpowering.
(room is 14x13)

yes. what species are you planning.

ie angels and discus do benefit with tall tanks.
botom dwellers benefit with the larger footprint and if you don't have long arms you would benfit with a shorter tank.

believe me I have a 110x 30" and I can barely reach bottom.

The mix would help, but I'd go for a 125 or 180.

Mostly Malawi Haps and Peacocks, a few yellow labs... and maybe a few tanganykans.

I already have quite a few adult fish in a 75g and they're a little tight.
Peacocks: Ngara, Rubescens(2), Sunshine, Fluvensent. Haps: Intermedius, Taiwan Reef, Electra(deep water hap), Hap Moori, Red Empress, a couple Victorians, a Black Calvus and a small Frontosa.. oh, and 4 petricola catfish and a pleco.

I'd like to add a Venestus, a couple other nice peacocks(lwanda, albino sunshine), and a couple more Yellow labs.

The 180 might be nice to house that special fish when you find him! But is 6" of depth really that much of a difference? I know that a 55 vs 75 is huge, but I would think that the benifit would be more negligable as they get deeper.

Oh, and I do have long arms, but 28" is about 2" higher than I would like, I've seent he 150H and 110H and they are too tall(but the added width might even it out looks wise)

id go with the 180 necause it gives you the most surface area. with cichlids, especially africans, the more surface area, the better. this allows you to put in plenty of rockwork and caves that can help lower aggression levels in the tank. if you cant go with the 180, stick with the 125. africans are more concerned with area rather than depth, unlike tall fish like angels and discus

Go with the 180 and put a peice of 1 inch or 1.5 inch stryfoam under your substrate, then you should be fine. I have about 2 inchs of substrate in my 77, it's 2 feet tall also, and there times I would give anything to have gone back and put styrofoam under the sand because sometimes its just a half inch or inch to deep to reach the thigns I need to reach.

So many opinion! Well, I did a lot of thinking. Cost was pointing to the 125, the 150 would look impressive.... but I went with the 180. The complete setup with canopy was the same price at the 180 with no canopy(which I can buy later).

I do have second thoughts, the extra 6" just makes it look overpowering.... and I wonder if it won't push the limits of the room... but I remember when I bought my first 'big' tank. I opted for the 55 instead of the 75 for the same reason... and I regretted not getting the 75g. In the end, it's was all about being able to have the room for fishies.

Still.. part of me knows that If I go back tomorrow, I can get the complete setup with the 125.
