I just notice this and i want to share with you guys. Sometimes if you take a close look into their Feeder goldfish tank at Petco, you will find out that they get some baby koi mixed with the feeder goldfish and rosy red minnow. Although they look similar to the feeder goldfish, however, if you exmine closely you will notice that they have a pair of barbels. Yesterday i just get 6 of these baby koi home and planning to put them into my uncle's pond once they get big enough.

P.s. The only bad thing about these little guys is that they are less beautiful as those that sell in high prize and they are very weak when you get them the first few days.

BUt.........they are only 13 CENTs.

Haha I have gotten some like that from the feeder section of a place called Pet Club. Although mine were an olive color fish, they were still beautiful in my opinion and a lot lighter on the wallet :) I'll have to start watching the feeders at Petco now.

If this is the only way to get koi for a reasonable price, I can understand it. However this is a very risky method, because feeder fish are kept in very bad conditions and often carry diseases. If you have other fish, it is extra important to quarantine these fish first. If these are not your first koi, I recommend saving up your money to get "real koi" instead. If properly cared for they live a long time, so you might as well get one your really like.

Some poor kid is gonna bring it home thinking it's a goldfish. lol then it's poor koi.

The 0.13 and 0.27 cent feeders at Petsmart are pretty fancy IMO some could pass for those bright red head goldies. I always keep about 10 on hand in their own tank (quarantined) not for feeding but for cycling and as a test tank for new products, meds, and filter media, water chemistry, you name it. Anything new I test it out on my feeder tank. I can tell you that they have taught me allot and as a result they are thriving and growing huge. Because of them I have leaned how to keep all my tanks very healthy with unexplained fish death a distant memory.

I have gotten crayfish out of Petsmart feeder tanks but never Koi. I will have to keep an eye out for them at Petco.

I got a shubunkin goldfish from a Petco feeder tank, too.

I used to find shubunkins and fantails with regular bodys in the feeder tanks. I havent found any in awhile though.

After I read this thread I keep looking again. But havent found any thing interesting yet.

My petsmart gives their crayfish away (they'ree parasites on plants).

yeah, 13 cents for a koi baby, but more chances than not its sick, so make sure you quarantine and treat accordingly. However, since the meds are prob more $$$ than the 13 cent fish is worth, why not just start with a healthy (slightly more $$$) pretty koi from a koi dealer that you would enjoy more?
