135 Gallon Build...

LED sounds much better than PC

So I have been tinkering around with SketchUp for the last few days and I came up with a look that I am going to try to create. The SketchUp is far from perfect but you can get the idea.
I am planning on using Birch Ply (perhaps 1/2" ply with a 1/4" Birch veneer laminated on the front and sides) for the main covering of the aforementioned frame (see earlier post) and Poplar (maybe even cheap-o pine) for the trim (my wife and I are simple folk).

I am still toying with lots of options for the canopy. I will probably make the entire top hinged and the two front panels (that match the doors of the stand) entire doors so I have lots of space for maintenance. The inside is a different story. I will have to make room for the lights to be mounted or hung.
At the moment, the lumber is still sitting in the garage getting dusty. I am finishing my dust collection for my table saw, router and router table, and floor sweep. Wood dust is pain.
Thanks for looking.

Remember, for the tank stand height, it should be pretty low, as once u put the tank on the stand, u should be able to reach in comfortably to the bottom without getting your t-shirt/shoulders wet.
Looking good.
R u going to try the sliding sump/canister thing.

I took that into major consideration when planning this stand. I am going to keep slow growing plants mostly so I don't have to be in the tank all that much other than the initial setup and planting. I also would like to not have to look down so much to get a good view of the inhabitants. The extra 3" will be good for that purpose. I will put in a sliding tray for the filter and maybe some shelves for extras. I will be keeping a 20 gal long inside as well for a breeder/QT. Once I see how much stuff is in the stand I may just change the 20 gal to a 10 gal. then build a separate less formal stand for the 20 long and a few 5.5s for shrimp tanks.

That sounds good, I think you will be able to fit a 20G long in there. Are you planning on putting any shelves in the stand for normal supplies(food, conditioner, etc.)

Once I see how much room is left after the filters, QT, and CO2 equipment is in place I can decide if and where I can put shelves.
I'm going to work a little more on the frame today and hopefully get the three parts glued up and ready for construction.

Just an idea......Make the top (the very top) removeable (like a pot lid). So you can change lights, ect, easier.

So instead of a piano hinge on the back of the top I should leave the top sitting on some stops so I can lift it off rather than lift it up like a chest? That sounds good too. The only thing I can see that would be problematic is when I am up on a ladder/step stool and lifting a 6'x1.5' piece of plywood I may get off balance and take a tumble and break my tibia.

Maybe a 45 degree cut....back upper to front lower... as viewed from the side (ends) so it all hinges back to be free from maintenance but not requiring removal...

That was my first idea but I was thinking it could be a little complicated matching up the dimensions. I'll see what I can come up with since that seems to be the better option for a canopy. Thanks, Rbishop.
