135 Gallon Build...

looking good so far!

I'd make the front of the canopy 2 pairs of full overlay doors with euro hinges, myself. Easy to remove if needed.

Euro hinges are the way to go. I will use hinges with a 135 degree swing or greater. I think I saw some on Rockler.com. The two full panels on the front is the plan with a full lifting top for access to the lights. Now if only I possessed the carpentry skills to accomplish the desired look...

So instead of a piano hinge on the back of the top I should leave the top sitting on some stops so I can lift it off rather than lift it up like a chest? That sounds good too. The only thing I can see that would be problematic is when I am up on a ladder/step stool and lifting a 6'x1.5' piece of plywood I may get off balance and take a tumble and break my tibia.

:o I did not mean by yourself.

Since my little boy spent a few hours with Grandma yesterday, I was able to finish all the dry fitting and making adjustments to the joints to make sure all sides were of equal dimension and square. The above picture of the top being dry fit is now glued and screwed. The front and back await the same treatment. Next step is cutting the spacers and adding the bottom 3/4 ply.
On a side note, my dust collection system is nearly complete. I will be connecting all 4" hose to the router and the fence at the table and the floor sweep to the dust separator tomorrow for a complete set up. Pictures will be posted as I finish the framing of the stand and the evolution of my shop.
Thanks for hanging around and commenting on the progress.

Thanks for the continued updates! My husband and I are enjoying this. He is especially interested in the progress on your dust collection system...why do I think our stand build is going to require this as well? Good for both of us!

The dust from routing and sawing is getting everywhere and on everything in the garage since it is so fine. My collector has a 5 micron bag but I want to upgrade that to a 1 micron filter. I am tired of washing the car and dusting things off. Plus it is bad to breathe in dust particles from plywood and worse for MDF (gives off toxic dust). I also have many other plans in the coming months to build two night stands, an end table set, and a picnic table. So the dust collection is a neccessity for this and other projects. The other big reason is for my son. He was born with CHD and has had the first of at least 2 heart surgeries and his respiratory system is not as strong as a normal child's.
Saying all that, dust is very fine and can cause allergy-like symptoms and I want to prevent my son and my family from experiencing all that.
Thank you for following along. I'll post more photos tomorrow and then on Wednesday or Thursday with the "finished" (but not really) shop.

I am really enjoying reading about your progress and look forward to seeing how the build comes along. Wish I was so practical ... would love a really big aquarium! Might be a stupid question but will the tank be made to measure or will you make it yourself?

Thanks for following along. There are no stupid questions anyone can ask me except one..."you gonna eat that?"
I actually have had the tank for about a year now. It was the biology department's tank at my university. The facilities manager gave it to me because my wife was the dept. secretary and he knew I was a hobbyist. The tank has been out of commission for about 5 years though so I will have to test it for leaks. If it does leak (or even if it doesn't) I will/may try to reseal it with black silicone. I have never resealed a tank before but I have read several threads where people have done such things. But I will cross that bridge when I come to it.
