well.... so I went a bought a 5 gallon QT for my clowns...

got a small 10G power head... and a HOB...

put the clowns in the tank... they were doing well.... even the ICH was dissappearing...

until... the levels in the tank SPIKED.... MASSIVELY.

did several water changes.... cleaned the filters in the HOB
but the water just kept getting worse.

woke up this morning to find .....

one upside down clownfish.... and another on the way...

I'm thinking of taking them back to the LFS that I bought them from... seeing as they came from there sick in the first place.... and that they are dead inside a month...

I refuse to back to a Big Al's ever again... their customer service was deplorable.... and they sell diseased fish...

side note**
in my main tank... I keep having problems keeping snails alive!
I bought another 3 astrea snails when i bought my clowns... and one of them will NOT eat.. I keep finding him upside down in the tank..

all levels in teh tank are nominal...
there is cleaner shrimp.. 4 hermits, and around 12lbs of live rock..

also have mushrooms in tank.

any ideas??

How often did you check the ammonia and how often were you doing water changes prior to the spike that killed them since the tank hadn't cycled?

what levels are you checking in the other tank? and what are your levels in terms of normal. numbers here might help? Snails are more sensitive than most fish to certain levels. the hermits could be killing off snails too, just a thought without a lot of info to go on.

and sorry about the clowns :(

in retrospect I didn't check the amonia....

as for water changes though.. i was doing them twice a week... due to it being a small tank.. and only a small filter on the back of it...

I don't have my notebook in front of me with the numbers in it for the full tank....

but they are low.

I have to pick up an amonia test kit...

This sounds like to me that you have had them in a un-cycled tank, and this is probably attributed to their demise i am afraid..

They will eat off the algae on the live rock, you dont need to feed them directly..Its always an issue with this type of snail, as once they are upside down, human intervention is needed to put them back on the rock..

Sorry to say but I really feel the ammonia contributed a great deal to their death. If the QT wasn't cycled you probably needed to do daily water changes.

in the first place I used water from my main tank....

and from there I added a powerhead... and then the HOB filter.

I think it was the amonia.... but I was doing frequent water changes...

what would you recommend to fix the amonia issue??

I still have one live clown (back in main tank and doing ok)

what is good product to use...

cause he needs to finish being treated for Ich.

thanks

in the first place I used water from my main tank.... the good bacteria resides on the surfaces rather than in the water column

and from there I added a powerhead... and then the HOB filter. it doesn't sound as if the filter media had been populated with good bacteria.

what would you recommend to fix the amonia issue?? When the QT tank isn't cycled I recommend checking ammonia daily and being prepared to do a large water change then if needed.

I still have one live clown (back in main tank and doing ok)what is good product to use... cause he needs to finish being treated for Ich. Why did you put him back in the display? I highly recommend treating with hyposalinity if you have a refractometer. If not I suggest you look at Coppersafe and follow the directions exactly. Including testing with a chelated copper kit and allowing the display to remain fallow for 6-8 weeks.

thanks

so back for another update.... the clown is doing well... all traces of ICH seem to be gone...

I don't know if spending 3 weeks in the QT tank with copper safe are what did it...

but he's quite happily swimming around the 14 gallon tank now...

I'm having some issues though...

bought a protein skimmer.... specific to the 14 - 29G tanks, and it doesn't really fit properly.... or work properly... grr...

have had a MASSIVE breakout of red slime algae though.... its EVERYWHERE!!!!

I've tried adjusting the water flow to make sure there's no dead spots... but its not working...

current parameters on teh water are: 0 amonia - 20 nitrates - .3 nitrites - 7.5ph

what do I do get rid of the slime???

I have the power head from the QT.... its a little 10g one... would that work???

HALP!!! lol

hmm

your ph is low and your trites trates and ammonia are high im surprised your clowns doing good and just because the ich has disapeared they lay eggs and can reinfect fish be careful
