I was in the market for a 125 or 180 gallon tank as my congo tank (they are all in a 75 gallon now) but I saw a 150 gallon tall that I really like but the dimensions seem less than ideal for schooling fish. Need some opinions

I want to stock about 20 full grown congos plus about 4 clown loach and one angelfish in the 150. The dimensions are 48"L X 31"H X 24"D

The 75 gallon I have is 48x22x18 I believe. Would a 125 gallon which is 72x22x18 be a better choice than the 150?

I'd think so, since 22 is plenty tall for your angel anyway and everyone will have more square footage to enjoy.

If it's a standard (dunno where you are from) sized All-Glass 75E it would be 48x18x20.

If I had the room and the same fish (and assuming the angelfish didn't need 31" of water height), I would go with the 180g 72x24x24. It has a much bigger footprint for schooling fish and, I think, tall enough for the angel? Four inches higher than the 75E (if that's what you have).

The 150H and the 120g short your footprint by 24". That's quite a bit. Dunno much about the angelfishes --

It's all about surface area. Go for longer and wider rather than higher if you are thinking about your fish. They will love you for it. I chose a wider tank rather than a higher one because it's easier for big fish (like clown loaches) to turn around when they are full grown.

Hmmm ok so maybe its back to deciding between the 125 and the 180. I have no idea if that 180 will fit but the pet store assures that it will. Its going to go in a basement. The stairs on the way down do a 90 degree bend. Looks kind of tight.

Tell them to deliver and install it in the basement for you :)

All kidding aside it should fit if you use two people and carry it downstairs on its end. Long side up, then you have no bends to worry about.
