None of them are particularly diurnal. Sometimes margined madtoms (N. insignis) are available; they are similar in size and habits to tadpole madtoms, but have a little more pattern.

i'm pretty sure i've seen margined madtoms for sale, i like the look of the cats but would like to at least occasionally see them out during the day.

The peppered loaches aren't going to work in a cold water set-up. Their temperature requirements are 75-80F.

You could go with dojo loaches, and there's a couple of cobitis loaches that would work.

yea, i came across that when i was looking for their latin name, my mom has been bugging me to get her some loaches for her tank so i think i'll donate them and maybe get some dojos.
