I have a planted tank with DIY CO2 and my plants have really grown extraordinarily well. I'd like to use cuttings from this tank to seed our other tanks and the future tanks further down the road.

My fingers are far from green and the 1 or 2 experiments I have tried failed horribly! Can anyone suggest a really good tutorial on how to grow a new plant from a piece of an old one?

shouldnt be terribly difficult, as long as youre not trying to plant a cutting from a bulb plant, it should work just fine. my advice.. use some sharp scissors, and get a good clean cut as close to the main stem as possible without damaging the main stem. if youre cutting the main stem, try to get as close to a branch as possible as more than likely the topmost branch will take over and be the main growth of the plant afterwards.

gently press the stem of the cutting into the substrate, making sure to not go TOO deep, but not too shallow.. usually 1.5-2" is a good depth. after ensuring it is stable, you should be good.

that is pretty much a rough idea of how to do it, if i had pictures i would post them.

Thanks J double R! :)

Mgamer20o0 - I don't even know what half the plants in my tank are called and neither does our LFS sales staff - everything is labeled "assorted plants - $1!" - 1d10t5 the lot of us! lol

Heres the list of the plants I have based on photographs here:

1. Cardamine (Cardamine lyrata)
2. Melon Sword (Echinodorus osiris)
3. Dwarf Hairgrass (Elocharis acicularis)
4. Pygmy Chain Sword (Echinodorus tenellus) or Brazilian Micro Sword (Lilaeopsis brasiliensis)
5. Brazilian Pennywort (Hydrocotyle leucocephala)
6. Tropical Hornwort (Ceratophyllum submersum)
7. Baby Tears (Lindernia rotundifolia)
8. Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)
9. Amazon Sword (Echinodorus amazonicus)
10. Nana (Anubias barteri 'Nana')

Can't tell for definite as some of the photos are dodgy...
