1st post.....and my new tank!!

Thanx,

im a designer so it took a while moving stuff around for me to be happy with it. Think black would be best, i had black sugar paper on mi old tank for a while and it did make a big difference......

Is that your fish on your pic? he/she roks........

I wish that fish was mine!!!!

Unfortunately, s/he is a Philadelphia Veil-tail... and they are actually extremely rare in the US anymore and fairly uncommon in a lot of other parts of the world! Amazing, huh, that we created this goldfish variety only to almost let it disappear completely from US aquariums!!!

From what I've heard, we're in the process of taking the remaining stock of Veil-tails and cross-breeding them with long-finned varieties of telescope-eye, Ryukin, and Oranda along with the preserved strains of borrowed European stock to try and bring the Philly Veil-tail back from the brink!

This is one of the European fish, I believe... and from what I understand of the task, the biggest hurdle is getting the proper conformity and length to reproduce with a good percentage of perfect fins in the overall hatch of fry. They're still having too many mixed results to consider their efforts successful, it seems. : /

So it'll be a looooong time before I can fulfill my dream of owning a veil-tail... but I'm nothing if I'm not patient and persistent!! :D

We use a blue back ground to add a little depth....:)

It is absolotely stunning, its fins are amazing........it seems crazy they wernt more popular or was it overkill??

Weser - Thanx, i may try a few to c which luks the best...ill post a pic when i do...

It was their more delicate nature that did them in. They weren't as hardy in cramped, unfiltered conditions that were more popular methods of fish keeping back then. The new varieties are being bred to be hardier, but that's the suspected reason for their downfall. Too high maintenance to keep the fins nice AND accombodate their needs for space and near-pristine water conditions. Without those, their finnage tends to stunt, I guess.

That and you usually have to keep a veil-tail as sell-price for at least 5-8 years before the longer fins really begin to show... so for the average consumer, they'd be spending more money for a fish whose fins didn't seem any more special at purchase than those of a fantail or ryukin. So most folks never saw the fancy finnage or could keep them alive long enough... hence the popularity of the veil-tail declined drastically.

I actually searched for them while on vacation in the Netherlands and only ever saw two large and LOVELY specimens at a lawn, garden, and aquarium store in Zoetermeer. But obviously shipping them is almost out of the question on my budget!!

i neva realised there fins grew to that length!!!!!

i was also thinkin about gettin a plec as i now have sand, but have read alot about them not doing very well........any comment? or alternatives?

This is :OT:, but you might want to double check your verigated plants and make sure they're fully aquatic. I'm thinking they might not be, but I've been wrong many times before though.:)
