Have you considered going fully planted? I'm a huge fan of planted nano/pico tanks, they're loads of fun. While it's too small for a betta, I've got a 1g with ghost shrimp and ramshorns, planted with Anubias nana, Bacopa australis, Java moss and a few Echinodorus tenellus. It's got a Red Sea nano filter and a 13W PC desk lamp over it - if it was a 2 or 3g, I'm sure it would make a nice home for a betta
