So I have a 2.5 gal tank with some black sand. I would like to put some mirco sword or sag but I am not sure on lighting. I have looked around but i am sure on the best lighting. Suggestions? I might put a betta in i am not sure right now.

Try to get a florescent light bulb that is between 5500k and 10000k but preferably as close to (or exactly) 6700k (daylight bulb) as you can as lighting in that range is very good for plants.

I would also try to get this moved to the planted section, you will get more responses there.

:iagree: but i've been told sand isnt necessarely the best substrate for plants. I've never tried it because of this so i have no personal experience, but thats what im told.

The substrate that I always use is Eco-Complete. I have 4 tanks with all live plants. If you have standard lighting, and it is low lighting, try anything in the Anubias family, small Vals, and Java fern.

I use a desk lamp on mine that has a 9w lighting and it works pretty well, you should try it ;)

So i am going to use my desk lamp which is 20 watts lol. Would micro sword (Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae) be ok in there? If not I have my backup idea......

I'm gonna say, root tabs if its just plain black sand like TMS. Lighting should be fine. Gonna be trial and error on the micro sword, never kept it myself but I've heard it can be demanding.

20 Watts might not be enough, although it sounds like alot of watts per gallon it's not necessarily enough because there's a certain amount of light plants need no matter how many watts. I recently found SHO bulbs, try them. They're supposed to be great for FW plants, efficient (they're CFL for aquariums), and cheap.

Looking for something like this?

25 Watt halogen desk lamp, Estes Marine Sand, Dwarf Chain Sword.
