Starting a 55 gallon located in a basement that's usually pretty cool. Better to have one heater at each end or is one 250w sufficent? If 2 is best, how should I split up the wattage? Thinking about going with stealths. Good choice?

Stealths are excellent. If you have sufficient water flow, I wouldn't imagine it would make a huge difference. Generally water isn't of uniform temperature in rivers and lakes anyway. The fish find a place where they are comfortable. Having two might protect you against possible heater failure however. maybe 2 100/150watt if you were going that route? Im no expert on heaters. I have a 200watt in my 65 and it is plenty sufficient. Room temperature and water flow would probably be your primary factors to consider.

Having two heaters is a safe idea. I also have a 55g and had 2x 200W heaters. One of them went out. Unfortunately, it was the Stealth that went out but I'm going to send it in for warranty.

I'm probably gonna buy 2 of those new Stealth Pro heaters.

In a 55, I woul do two 150s..but really you should mention how cold the basement average temp is...you may need more than normal (3-5 watts per gallon) if it is really cool. Having a well fitting glass cover will help with heat loss.

I would agree with splitting the heat between two heaters for safety - if one craps out and doesn't work, your fish won't freeze right off the bat since the other will still work, and hopefully you check the temp often enough to notice that it is dropping. And if the thermostat goes out in one, your fish won't be cooked since it's not powerful enough to overheat the whole tank.
