2 hob filters for 55 gal reef

What kind of skimmer do you guys reccomend. And what about powerheads. I know i am gonna need around 60lbs of rock and a a ton of sand for 2in or so at the bottom. This is a idea at the moment. Still have to gt rid of the cichlids that I have at the moment.

That honestly makes no sense what-so-ever, you agree its better to spend less and save now and upgrade later? There be no telling how long before his first issues appear in this tank with freshwater filters only as the tanks only filtration. When you been in this hobby as long as some here, you know then that it far better to set it up right the first time or other wise you will find yourself over spending to where you could had spent a bit less and have far better equipment. It just makes no sense :headshake2:

No I agree to spend what is needed to get the job done efficently. I have not given up on the overflows yet. But i really don't want to do that. I want to have a nice tank without breaking the bank. That is all.

One good thing for you is your tank not all that big, but cost wise it can still be up where your lease to expect it will be. What you need to look for is a siphon over flow box, smaller tank for your sump and skimmer, and a return pump with tubing for your return, it will need to match the flow rate of the siphon overflow box, which should also have some type of adjustment control. You best need to hear from those who deal with these items most. Myself, I prefer to drill my tanks.

Why not go all natural? its cheap and efficient... just buy a really good HOB reef octopus skimmer. Then overdo the live rock and plenty of flow. Then grow macro algae in the tank with the corals. Make a divit behind the live rock for the algae to grow.

Then all you need is, powerheads, skimmer, live rock, and some plants..... Or you could just make an algae scrubber which is 10x better than any skimmer, especially for reefs.

I would like to drill my tank. I think it is tempered though. It is a marineland tank that is about 5 years old. If it isn't tempered then drilling is no problem. Any way to find out if it is or isn't.
