2 male bettas got together?!!!

okay, well a few months ago i decided i was going to make my empty 10 gallon a new mansion for my crown tail bettas. i decided to do it red white and blue because the 2 bettas i had were red and blue. unfortunatly it took me a long time to find a nice white male, so for a long time the red betta was on the far left, and the blue one was on the far right, with nothing in the white compartment. well last week i got really lucky and found a white body male with only a little blue and red on its crown. the only problem i saw was that he was very young and still just a little guy (not even half the size of the 2 i had.) well as soon as i put him in, he loved it and started playing with the filter current. the other two immediatly noticed him and tried to get him. i didnt think anything of it b/c i keep the water low ,about an inch and a half below the dividers, b/c i heard of bettas getting over the dividers.
well sure enough sometime last night after i went to bed big blue got over into the middle compartment with little white (thats thier names).i couldnt see little white, but i immediatly scooped big blue back to his space. then after about 2 mins little white came out of hiding! i couldnt believe that he made it!!!!!! i had assumed that when 2 male bettas got together, one would definatly die. has anyone else had this happen? and how can i make sure it doesnt happen again?? the dividers are big and reach the hood of the tank, i dont know how this huge guy got over! im just happy everything is ok, although i did loose the otto i had with little white, but i dont know how or why.

just wanted to share my story!! anyone else have a story similar??

How far does the divider go under the gravel? He may have snuck under the divider.

Betta are great jumpers. You need something over the top of the dividers to be sure it doesn't happen again. If he did it once, he'll try again especially since he knows he can.

You might also check around the sides of your dividers as well, just in case there is a gap somewhere.

I'm glad little white made it ok. Probaby because he had a good place to hide and was smart enough to get there pronto.

Sure would like to see a pic of that tank. Do you have a digital camera ?

I have had this happen before in my 25G with my 5 males.
they i had at the time 4 great big huge guys all different colors and they were all living happily for about a month. then i added a nice little blue guy i named him L'Ninio. anyways he was in the middle. {by the way they were all in betta barracks.}
During the night i heard a splash. then i looked over to my tank and noticed that i couldnt see the shadow of the betta barracks.
I walked over and turned on the light, only to see that all of my males were out of my betta barracks and in my tank all together.
Now L'Ninio was never one to fight. he was always very mellow never flared even at a mirror. I noticed that i had seen 4 of my 5 males. then i realized omg! L'Ninio isnt here!!!
I quickly resorted to my betta starter kits. which i had been keeping just in case more then 5 males took my heart. i started scooping them all up into separate kits. i still couldnt find L'Ninio.
I figured he was hiding and i would let him relax for the rest of the night.
the next morning i still hadnt seen my poor little L'Ninio.
I searched the castle. No. I searched the skull. No. I searched under the shark. No. Hmmm were is he!!!
then i noticed my filter wasnt running properly. hmmmm. I looked behind my tank into the filter to see L'Ninio swimming around happily omg what a night. sigh. i caught L'Ninio and put him back in the tank. He was quite ripped up. Shortly after this, L'ninio pasted.

*sigh* what a great betta he was.

I've heard people having 2 males in the same tank, living hapily. I guess that bettas that have ben bred to to "tolerant" could live with each other. I actually have a betta that i think would do well with others (but none of my other 1's are like that) He won't even go after fry. O well, i guess we'll never know.
