Try to get tank raised rams. The ones you get from the LFS are sometimes less hardy than the tank raised home bred ones. Check Aquabid.com for rams, if you can.

I personally like rams better than gouramis....plus, since they tend to be bottom dwellers, it might work better for the tetras.

Another idea is to get another type of dwarf cichlid.....ever seen cockatoos cichlids?
