Long time no post...

Does anyone have any suggestions for a 20 gallon (long) cichlid tank? I'm thinking smaller fish to maximize numbers in the tank, maybe I'm going in the wrong direction... Thanks in advance.

Rams cichlids or small peaceful fish but they seem to be a little difficult to keep

apisto of any type if you dont mind spending money... kribinsis, rams if you know what your doing and if the tank is well established. Shell dwellers or julie ornatus. Im sur emooman will be able to give you some better answers

Dwarf Flag Cichlids (Laetacara Curviceps) are pretty cool, a pair would do well in a 20. They're also known to be reasonably prolific. You could also do keyhole cichlids (Cleithracara maronii), or bolivian rams (Microgeophagus altispinosa). They're all reasonably undemanding.

Good ideas. I had originally thought shell-dwellers and a buddy at my lfs suggested kribs. I think I need some time to better research what fish my lfs has in stock and then choose from that selection. Unfortunately, the selection of cichlids is generally limited to oscars, terrors, etc. around here. I still haven't ruled out the possibilty of a community tank yet, we'll see... Thanks again everyone.

The SA and WA dwarfs (kribs, keyholes, apistos, rams) lend themselves well to a community tank. Just plan the tank around them (ei no cory cats, top water schooling fish like hatchets and pencil fish, small algea eaters like ottos) if you want to see any fry from them.

You could do a Tang community in a 20g long as well. Fill one half of the tank with limestone rocks and leave the other half open sand. Add a pair of small julies (transcriptus or ornatus) as rock dwellers and a pair or trio of shellies (brevis, oceletus) for the open area. It's only two species, but that thats one more species of cichlids than you'd be able to fit in a 20g SA cichlid tank.

Thanks again. Can anybody recomend any real good websites with reliable info that I should check out. I've seen a few, but it never hurts to ask.

I guess I should add that I don't think fry are in my plans for the time being.

good links, thanks for the help. I'm warming up the idea of a pair of jullies and some shellies, but I went to my lfs today and they didn't have any of the fish I had researched. That means more research and a trip tomorrow. Thanks again.
