I was thinking about setting up a 20 gallon tank soon and my plan was to have neon tetras for sure. I'm very new to all of this and was wondering how should I stock it. Are there any other fish anyone would recommend with the tetras and how many tetras should go in that tank?

Hello, welcome to AC!

Are you thinking of a 20 gallon long or a 20 gallon tall? The footprint is important and will help to determine what kind of fish will be better.

I think in a tall I would recommend sticking with six or seven neons. You could use corydoras (look at the different dwarf varieties as well), harlequin rasboras, or other small tetras/rasboras. Additionally, a male better or a dwarf gourami or a trio of the sunset gouramis (small and peaceful) could be a good center piece fish. There are lots of options, but with the smaller footprint of the 20 tall, you won't be able to stock as heavily.

Neons are a good candidate for a 20 gallon tall since they swim pretty much all over the tank, especially in the mid waters.
How many you get depends on what else you want to keep with them.
12-15 Neons and 2-4 Sunset Honey Gouramis would be very colorful but would not leave room for other fish.

Ok thank you very much. I will definitely look into that combination. I definitely wanted some neon tetras. I'm not to worried about adding more than you suggested.
