i'm putting this post in the right place.
i plan on rehoming my goldfish and am thinking of turning my 20 gallon tall tank into a planted tank.
i would have low light plants for it and a few peices of drift wood.
what fish would do well in a planted tank?

The plants I am thinking of getting are:
java fern
Taiwan moss
water sprite
vals
brazilian Pennywort

what fish won't eat the plants?
the only fish I definately know I want to get are some otocinclus catfish and a few cherry shrimps. I'd appreicate some suggestions.

what should I do to keep the tank cycled when i no longer have the goldfish in the tank? i plan on taking my goldfish into the pet store where i work on saturday. all i need to get to make my tank a community tank is to get a heater. i'll be doing a water change as well but is there something else that i need to do?

What kind of substrate do you have?

Theotheragentm, I plan on find a new home for the goldfish and turning the tank into a community/planted tank.

Mgamer20o0, Where do I get ammonia from? Would it be ok if I put 2 or 3 fish from my 30 gallon in the 20 gallon to keep it cycled? After I get a heater of course.

Rbishop, I just have regular gravel in the tank. medium sized gravel. Should I use a different kind of substrate?

yes you could move fish over to keep it cycled.

for a planted tank you really want to stick with a grain size in the 1-3mm size which is normally what one would call coarse sand.

i use pea gravel in my planted tanks. works well for me so far. just as long as it isnt too larger of gravel.
