i was wondering what would be a good power filter for a 20 gallon long. i was also wondering is it better to get a 30 gallon filter for a 20 gallon or should i just get the 20 gallon filter.

Aquaclear :)

You can never over-filter your water, the only thing you need to consider when choosing a filter is how much the current will blow your fish around. For a 20g long, I would personally go with the Aquaclear 200 (50g).

If you are planning on keeping your tank lightly stocked and crystal clean, you could go with the smaller Aquaclear 150 (30g).

Yeah, definately go bigger when looking for a filter. on my 20L I have a AquaClear 30 Hang-on-Back (HOB) and a Eheim Liberty HOB and use a hagen power head for an undergravel filter. I also have a small sponge filter going in the tank too.

What kind of fish are you planning? That would help determine how much filtration you will need and the rest of your tank, filter and gravel maintenance.

I personally use an ac50 on anything 40g and under and it works fine either by itself or with, say, a sponge filter.

With just Cherry Shrimp, you don't need or really want a lot of filtration. The good thing about the AquaClear's being mentioned is that they all have a simple throttle feature where you can slow down the water flow to almost a trickle. For cherry shrimp, you want to put either a spong filter over the filter intake or like me, use a fine mesh filter media bag over the intake. Any plant detritus caught by the filter media bag will be eaten by the shrimp. I always have lots of cherry shrimp and shrimplets crawling around on my filter intake eating the plant detritus. If the filter media bag starts to get clogged, I just lift up the filter intake tube (which I do with weekly filter maintenance anyhow), slosh it around a little in the tank so the shrimp get off of the mesh bag and then I rinse the bag good before reinstalling. I like the mesh bag better than a sponge since the sponge can hold more detritus and I also worry about really small shrimplets crawling into the holes of the sponge and not leaving it when I need to clean it. I guess it depends on the pore size of the sponge.

I have an AC50 on my 20 long tank. It does a great job and the flow can be adjusted to a trickle or a nice flow. I always go larger filtration on my tanks.

I always go bigger on the filter versus the tank size. My 100 gallon has a filter designed for a 400 gallon.

Also like the other posts have said, take what fish you want to keep in consideration. Larger fish means more waste means you need more filtration.

I have never been sorry getting more filtration per tank size.
