My sister is giving me her 20 gallon tank and i wanted to know what kind fish i should add to that tank. I want to add some cories but i wanted to hear what you guys think before i do anything.

Thanks in advance for the ideas:D !

hah i bet every one knows what im gunna say but here goes

german blue rams and some small tetras would look nice in there maybe a gourami or 2 and some cories would do good there too

but if u get the rams u should get them young they are like 20$ when they are older  and mine were 5$ cuz they were young and only get 2 of em a male and female

You could keep them together. Meaning that they wouldnt kill each other but its not advisable because they have totally different water requirements.
As for not liking to be in 3's...they would be fine. You just have to watch your tank space.

My plan for my 20g.

(*) indicates planned purchase.

3 Zebra Danios
(*)2 more zebras
(*)5 Cardinal Tetras
1 Dwarf Gourami (had 2, but one was a bully)
1 Swordtail
(*)3 Cory's

Just throwin out some ideas.

Thanks everyone!!!

Thanks for the ideas.
I have 4 zebra danios in my 29 gallon tank along with mollies, platties, and neon tetras. I love watching them swim around. Those fish are very active!
About the blue rams, how big do they get? I have no experience with them. I like the idea of having gouramis. I will consider that.
Also, i was thinking of using sand instead of gravel in this tank. What do you guys think?

I have never used it personally but have considered sand on a few occassions. I believe silica sand is the best type to use and it does look nice. My concern is with maintenance, compacting and other issues so I have avoided sand so far.

I think a dwarf gourami is an excellent choice for a 20 gallon. I have never kept rams or kribs but they seem to be small cichlids that are peaceful enough for smaller community tanks.

Some good possibilities include: danios, smaller barbs (there a few i think), tetras, livebearers (endlers, guppies, platies would be best for that size tank), kuhli loaches, and killiefish if you can find them. Killiefish are very nice looking and kuhli loaches will do a good job keeping the bottom clean.

Cories are the perfect bottom dwellers in the smaller tanks. Try to get a group of 5 or so. The bigger the group the more active and friendly they seem to be.

I have a couple of gouramis in my 20 gallon with a school of tetras. They all get along. And the dwarf gouramis are fun to watch.

can you keep blue rams with mollies and guppies? Do they not do good in trio's?

Whatever its worth, I do have both blue rams and platies in the same tank. pH = 7.4, GH = 5, KH = 2. They are all healthy and have been living together for the past 7 months or so.

Rams get about two inchs long. I was told that they can bully eachother, so I only got 2 for my 20g. So far they are enjoying eachother's company. They nip at eachother occasionally, but they still hang out, all buddy, buddy style.

just throwing out some numbers:
2 rams
1 gourami
8 rasboras
4 cories
