20 gallon tank. What cats+loaches should I have.

I was thinking 3 hillstream loaches, 3 peppered corys(c. palyeatus) and an uspside down cat. How about non cats?

I like the corys but I don't know how big the hillstreams or upsidedown catfish get. I would probably go for a variety of corys with three of each since they get along with any addition to your tank that won't eat them! The upsidedown cat would look good too though! Good luck!!

My favorite upside down is the Asian, Mystus leucophasis. They often look poor in the retail tanks but healthy ones are deep black. An awesome catfish but at 12" it gets too large for a 20gal. It will eat small fish as well. The "classic" upside down cat Synodontis nigriventris stays small (less than 4") and the lace cat S. eupterus gets a bit larger. Just make sure you know what your buying. Planet catfish is a great quick reference.

Sounds like a bit crowded for the bottom of a 20...is the tank tall or long?

I personally would go with 5 or 6 of the corys, since my peppered corys seem to like a slightly larger group. Maybe choose either the hillstream loaches or the upside down cat, since trying to fit all of them in there could be pushing it, depending on what other fish are in the tank.
