20g South American Blackwater Biotope

What would be a more accurate biotope? Plants or no plants? I would prefer not to do plants but I want it to be as accurate as possible. And if the biotope is more accurate with plants, which plants would I add? I've heard echinodorus, heteranthera zosterifolia, ceratophyllum submersum, and camboba caroliniana.
More accurate with the fish you want to keep with be either. If you don't want to mess with plants, then don't. ;)

My mom is leaning towards rummynose tetras. Woohoo!

Hey, would the stock still work if I added 3 otos and left the tetra/hatchetfish school at 6? Does it fit the biotope? I already have 3 otos in my 20 gallon and since they're from South America too, I'd prefer to leave them there as long as they can be found where tetras, rams, and cories are. Or would the tank be overstocked?

Any suggestions?

You'd be overstocked. Live plants would allow heavier stocking, also added filtration. I like a well stocked tank but opinions vary. Fish size has a lot to do with it but if the tank appears extra roomy then add a couple more of something. 1" (adult size) per gallon is what I start with, then it's a judgement call.

Okay. The otos can go to my 38 gallon then. Would it be an overstock if I added a couple of black mystery snails?

Update: I've made a plan on the supplies I need. Lucky for me, it's not much. I just need new substrate, a different light (I'm going to use incandescent because it's not very bright), new filter media, and decorations like the driftwood and IAL. I'm hoping to raise a little money for it by selling the rasboras.

And I've begun the slow process of taking the tank down. I'm hoping to move the betta this weekend. I have another betta in the 38 gallon that I'm going to give to my cousin. I'll move the otos with him. Since I'm still debating on what to do with the shrimp, I'll leave them in with the rasboras for now. I still have to figure out which pet shops will take the rasboras, so I'm going to make some phone calls sometime in the following days. The tank should be nice and empty pretty soon.

And I won my auction for the driftwood I wanted. Should be here in a few days!

And unfortunately, I'll be setting up the tank now but I won't be able to get any fish until July. I'm going to camp for two weeks so I don't want to get any fish before then. But as soon as I get back I'm going to begin stocking immediately.

Bad news. I won't be able to start this tank until mid-summer. :(

Taking your time isn't bad news. It helps ensure a lack of rushing and the mistakes that arise as a result.

Very true. But getting started is also fun! At least for now I can focus on combating the algae in my 38 gallon.
