Has anyone seen the giant firecracker sticking out of the earth's exhaust pipe? Is the fuse lit?
If you shove a potato up there it'll blow out the muffler bearings, thus putting out the fuse.

The only way we could be hit by something and NOT see it coming would be a dark comet. A dark comet is void of ice and is just rock, so there would be nothing to reflect light for us to see.
