That just goes to show what leadership does to people. MacGyver gets his own team to lead around and suddenly fixing and building things out of scraps and paperclips is above him! So he constantly waits around for some 'scientist' to do it instead. Then uses ammunition like there is an unlimited supply of the stuff and gets all the credit.
