I have a 25gl tank with 9 neons, 4 long fin rosy barbs and 1 small golden algae eater, am I full? I would like some more algae eating fish and i heard clown loaches school well with rosy barbs. I would probably have to get 4 of them (the pet store has some little ones), would that put me over the top? If not then could they stay in there for 2 years ( i know they grow big).
It wouldn't necessarily put you over the top, but I would wait until you have the bigger tank. What happens if you can't get it and 2 years or so from now you have fish getting too large for your tank and no place will take them? Plus clowns are not really known for their algae eating. You could get a few otos, who do a good job, or even a bristlenose pleco. They don't get huge like alot of the other plecos, and are good algae eaters
I'm pretty sure I'm right when I say clown loaches dont even eat algae ????, corrdct me if I'm wrong someone, mine never seem to eat it anyway. But for the record a 25gakl tank is way too small for 4 clownloaches I'd say you probably need at least a 75gal tank if not really a 90gal, that not to say people dont keep them is smaller tanks than a 75 but I dont think they'd be happy in something as small as a 25gal. Anyway your call
I think 1 clown loach (although recommended to buy in groups) will get too large for a 25 gallon tank. Since they can get 6-inches in an aquarium, you should start with 50 gallons for one. They are omnivores/scavengers but algae would be a very small part of their diet. Ottos will keep the 20g nice and clean....they are one of the best algae eaters out there. I had problems with my golden algae eater....he became aggressive towards the other fish. That will never happen with an Otto. Ottos aren't very hardy though, so make sure your ph is stable 7.0, maybe a bit acidic (6.5-7.0).
Dwarf chain loaches are a kind of loach that won't get too big for a 25 gallon (they grow to about 3 inches or a bit more) and are very entertaining. They must be kept in a group though.
