The water for the tank is tap water
Tap water varies from place to place. The hardness of the water, expressed as GH (general hardness) does impact all fish so it is important to know this before selecting fish. The pH is important but less so, as there is some degree of adjustment. The GH however can seriously affect the fish's physiology and metabolism. Depending what the GH is, some fish can manage, some may not.
You can usually find out the GH by checking with your municipal water people who likely have a website. If you find it and can't decipher the numbers, post the link and I can have a look.
