now im trying to decide if i want to up my schools of corys to 4 and 4 and add anothr columbian or add a totally different school. if only the columbians would go to the top.
maybe I will stop after it gets annoying J.

Up the school of corys. And then could u give us ur current stocking including the 8 corys.
Not sure if columbians stay at top, I have never kept them
I don't really know of any tetras that stay at the top. Guppies do, but u have a betta. I thought you wanted a few male swordtails, just get them, as tehy will perfectly, and they won't breed.

6-columbian tetras
4-julii corys
4-peppered corys
1-king betta
1-bulldog pleco
1-female apisto

I am pretty sure they won't. R u sure about that? I have seen them kept in petcos together like female swordtails in one tank, and male swordtails in the other.
and ur stocking looks good, you could add like 10 green neon tetras or 8 neon tetras or 6 cardinal tetras. but I can't guarantee they will stay at the top
