I have also added 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per gallon to protect the fish from nitrite problems.

I've never heard this before. That's interesting. Where did you learn it?

It's on a few sites on the internet. Well, today my nitrites are 0 anyway, having disappeared overnight, so will gradually start to replenish water with non-salted during routine weekly PWC, now that the tank has cycled. All inmates doing well. I am posting a new thread on my suspicions about this to see if I can get some answers (see 'plant decay and nitrites?').
