29 gallon suggestions

yeah, the parrot is a hybrid Nate......not sure what they mix to get them...lol.

I did an image search on those daffodils.....I'd keep those too !! :D Here's a profile I found on them...I don't know how accurate it is, I don't know anything about these fish.....but it could be a start for you.. http://fish.mongabay.com/species/Neolamprologus_pulcher.html
I wouldn't go for a larger tank Nate.......especially since you can't afford it. Just pick which fish you'd really like to keep and do some research into compatable tankmates and setups for it.

And....have fun in the process !! :thm:

Nate - Daffodils are really cool fish. If you have a pair, they'll fill up that tank for you with fry. They're colonial in nature, so after the parents have fry the fry stay around and help take care of future generations of fry...very cool social behavior to watch. If you have two of the same sex, they're still cool fish. They're very hard to sex, so you could always return just the parrot, and maybe add two more daffodils (unless you know the two you have are a pair because they've started spawning). You can make some money raising daffodils to a size big enough to sell!

Parrot: Severum + Red Devil
N. pulcher: Lake Tanganyika (higher % of rift lake salts needed)

Nate, I have a pair of N. brichardi in my 55g with some peacocks. Same family as pulchers (ref. above link) Look verry similar. Hints on sexing:
Females are generally smaller
Females have slightly shorter finnage--I spent over half an hour watching the tankful to pick them out--they were all same age.

Although they are the smallest of all (and they grow slowly) they RULE half the tank (they let others swim, but sometimes run them off--mine have two little tiny teeth top and bottom their breeder wasn't even aware of, but they've never been physical with the others). Often called "Fairy Fish" or Lyre Tails, they excavate holes in the substrate when spawning--mine have moved sand/crushed coral/gravel mix under one rock, and have begun another!! No fry yet, but her belly is swollen.

Best of luck. OH, the parrot will get UP TO 10"; not necessarily that large, but they do get big, and round roly-poly. ~renee

so the daffodil cichlid are african cichlids?

becasue lake tangyinka is in africa..................right?

nate

then shouldnt the parrot fight the african cichlids?

They dont fight based on nationality.

It has more to do with the temperment of the fish and if he/she is protecting anything like territory or mates/fry. Also the more they see eachother the more they will fight so the bigger the tank the better.

If you look carefully at your Parrot, you'll see it's mouth is fixed open. They cannot move them, so biting aggression would be next to impossible. They do have a little flap right inside to keep out detritus, but it really is a disturbing deformity resultant of the hybridization. Therefore, the Parrot has little defense against aggressive fish The Daffodils are only territorial, and even with their diminutive size, can run off others from their space. I just think the Parrot is going to eventually get too big or become stunted in your tank--granted, a 29L seems like alot of space, but he'll need to have swimiming/stretching out room later. Sorrry. Maybe you can start saving up for a used--they don't seem to grow as quickly as others. :dance2:
