29g stocking large school

If that's what you like then I would go with 12 of each, I like the idea of lowering the school size and getting some kuhlis. As for the angel, I think the Dwarf Gourami would be safer and better.
Yep, I wouldn't recommend getting an angel. It's kinda gonna throw off your schooling idea with a giant fish. LOL
No, an angel gets big and eats little fish. One by one they'll disappear...
If you want a centerpiece fish, get a dwarf gourami because these fish don't need to school and they are brightly colored. A paradisefish or betta *might* work too, but then shrimp would probably not.
Besides, if you get two dozen 1" fish, 8 corydoras and a dwarf gourami, you've gone well over the "one inch per gallon rule"...not that I believe in that rule, since it only works for slender fish. But 33 fish in a 30" tank seems like crazy lots to me.

I think a Betta would probably be fine, you can never tell with Bettas. I would stay away from Paradise Fish for that tank though. I think you should just go with the Dwarf Gourami. 33 fish does sound like a lot...but I think it should be fine.

Unhealthy obsession?
Like many have said, it just depends on the fish. If you have good filtration, a good water change schedual, plants, proper livestock distribution in the tank etc., you can get away with it. Gourami's usually hang out near the top, tetras and rasboras in the middle, cories and kuhli's at the bottom. I think it will be a very nice tank.
Thanks everyone for the input - I think I will do Kuhli's on the bottom along with the cories. I think I might do a pair of Honey Gourami's as someone suggested before. I might rethink the Rummies because I saw some at a fish store yesterday, and they were friggin big! Definitely over 2 inches.
