2nd attempt at trying plants...failing hard

another thread on this topic. And yes, the brown stringy things are indeed roots, not holdfasts lol. But they do a good job of keeping the plant attached to places like rockwork or driftwood. I had better luck growing the plant in the substrate. I tried it both ways. The root tabs in the substrate and the plant "roots" buried. As long as the rhizome isn't buried, you're good.

I stopped today and grabbed another lava rock. Got home and tied the fern to the rock and put it on top of my others. Its not a good 3-4+ inches off the bottom.

"AC" glue is "CA" glue (cyanoacrylate)

super glue is one example. you can get them in different thicknesses and set times. regular super glue is about a medium thickness with a somewhat fast set time. superglue gel is obviously thicker...
all "CA" glue pretty much sets instantly on fingers...

yes... the roots are "roots"... but in these plants they don't take in nutrients quite as well as the roots of others. these plants don't need to be root fed and will fair quite fine with just water column ferts. unlike vals, crypts, swords... the roots primary purpose are as hold-fasts as has been suggested.

seems to me the reason root tabs worked so well on java fern is slow leaching into the water column as well as what bit the roots were able to scramble for. i could be wrong, there, but that's my impression.
