3/4 plywood or old door

I'm getting set to build a new tank, stand, and hood. But before I can do that I'm remodeling my room first. It just so happens, that an old closet door that I took out is the perfect size for the top for my tank stand. Can this be used instead of 3/4" plywood? For the stand I'm following the Garf.org plans. The stand will support a 72lx24wx12h 90 gallon tank that weights about 750#'s?

What kind of door is it, you may ask. I'm not sure, but its certainly not a solid door and is 1 5/8" thick.

Hmmm, If I don't use it for the stand, maybe I can use it for the hood instead.

Use it for the hood, if you really want to recycle it! DO NOT use it for the top of the stand!!!!

Agreed...a hollow-core door has no place under a 750 pound tank.

I would defiantly use it for the hood instead. If you don't know what kind of wood it is or how old it is. You don't want to possibly use something that isn't going to hold a massive 90 gallon tank. You need a solid sturdy piece of wood like pine or oak. Good luck!

Definitely not under the tank!! It will squish it like a bug!

And not to split hairs or anything, but a 90 gallon tank will be closer to if not more than 1,000 lbs!! Water weighs about 8.5 lbs per gallon, the tank probably weighs in at least 150 lbs, and then you will probably have about 200 lbs worth of gravel!! As you can see, it adds up quick, so make sure you put it in your room somewhere where the floor can support it well and not sag!

Good advice. Thanks everyone. Will do. Now that I think about it, this was a very silly idea. This reminds me of Kramer, from Seinfeld, when he had an idea for an oil tanker blatter. To test the idea, he filled a rubber ball with oil, then heaved it out of a 3 story window to see if it would break. One of my favorite episodes. Giddy-up!
