3 Gallon Stocking Question

mooman,

While I do not agree with the way some people go about dispensing "advice", I believe that if every single person who asked me about stocking was overstocked, I'd tell every one of them that I felt such. I wouldn't intentionally dispense advice contrary to what I believe in order to maintain some sort of semblance of credibility.

...language like: "you can't”, "period!” and "never" should be replaced with words like: "inadvisable”, "I wouldn't”, and "you might want to reconsider".
^^This I agree with wholeheartedly.^^

depends how often you'll change the water.

I think with a 3g its not more the issue of water quality, but swimming space. Its too small for even the smallest fish to cruise around.

As for the authoritarian language/advice dispensing... i do agree some people can get their point across in a more friendly manner.

I agree. I've noticed a lot of dictatorial and sometime high and mighty responses to posts. Fortunately this shouldn't bother most people but that doesn't mean that it's OK. Imagine if there are some people out there who need advice but are too scared to ask for fear of derision - think of their poor fish who are not getting the care they deserve through what I can only describe sometimes as "aquarist snobbery".

Not thinking of anyone in particular here by the way, most people are great and on the whole I do actually love this forum!

This is turning into an entirely different thread - I agree that some people are very full of their own self importance and seem to rate themselves as some kind of guru on these matters. I have asked a few questions as I am totally new to this game - on occasions I have felt that I have had my head bitten off for asking a perfectly normal question. Please be careful how you write things as it can come across in the wrong way and alienate people. This is a great hobby, lets keep it a friendly one where we can all feel like that we can ask whatever we want without ridicule or fear of angry responses being posted. :cool2:

Me personally, I feel the only fish that would work well in this tank and you can have more than one, and yes I do mean more than one. Is the dwarf live bearer. These guys are supper tiny and do very well in the small tanks like a 3 gallon. The males get 1/4 of an inch and the females barely a whole inch. These guys are not flashy but they are fun to watch. See the males chase each other while the females just ignore them. I keep some hornwort in the tank with them and I have kept a sucussful colony of 12 in a 2.5 gallon tank with weekly water changes.
Here is a pic of a male

If you want to see the size ration difference check out my avatar. Yes, I do push this fish as a small tank fish. They are tiny and you can keep more than one or 2 in the tank in this size. I think you might actually be confortable with a start of 6 fish, and have up to 15 with no problems in a 3 gallon. Many live bearer fanatics keep and raise these guys in colonies in 1 gallon pickel jars. With mine, i have kept them with a small sponge filter and some java moss and a piece of hornwort and they just bred like crazy for me. Once I moved them to a larger tank that is when I had problems. grrr..

I think it is a nice tank for a ghost shrimp/snail setup. Maybe have a few shrimp, and a couple snails that you like. Some java fern and/or java moss would be nice too.

Rollin, you have a very good idea there. But instead of Ghost Shrimp, i recommend Amano shrimp. They are hardier and live years longer than ghost.
