So I have the option to get a 3" Spilurum...does that mean that he's lived a lot already, and might not have long left? I could also possibly get some fry-type ones, but I think the guy wants me to take the big guy for free so that he can get a new home...the fry aren't his, but they belong to a friend of his...

I'm not an expert on these guys, but I think most archocentrus can live 10 years (or close to it). Also, don't they get to 4+ inches?

I find it hard to pass up free fish! :D

Would it be better to get another 20 or two for fry, or get a larger tank which would have to be taken up in the elevator next year?

free fish! free fish! who got free fish i want some.... oh wait no more tank room left. but i feel u guys on free fish and tanks, 3 of my 4 tanks were free, they are definitely hard to pass up on.

Personally, since with most stands there is space for a second 20 down below, that's what I'd do since you're dealing with space issues...but I'm more of a darwinist and just keep the fry in the parents' tank (whoever survives, survives).

I feel bad about that sometimes, but one aquarist with a breeding pair of convicts (or their close relatives) could probably overpopulate the earth with fry in about 3 years time...

Unfortunately, my stand has space for a 10 only below...and that's only if you spend serious time playing the angles. My parents won't let me get another tank for now, so I'll just take the three-incher off the guy's hands for "right now"! ;)

I think that's the kindest thing you could do for that guy! Hey, you might have found the high personality fish you wanted, and the price is right.
