OHMYGOSH whatta day! Started off with the sad and somewhat unexpected passing of the last Mrs. Guppy. I thought she was doing better, but I guess those darn men just harassed her too much and she gave up. I feel awful. In my defense, when I was buying the guppies, the petsmart girl did tell me they'd be fine and not to buy any more females than 2 because I wouldn't want "THAT many" babies. I read differently later, but I already had them then and well, you know the story. :(

Anyway, I had done a 33% water change yesterday, checked ammonia this morning and it was finally coming down, so I did another 33-40% change and then checked ammonia again several hours later and it was 0! I was thrilled! The 2 remaining boy guppies looked good, Mr. Betta was happy, the cories were scooting around, the mollies were chillin and life was good.

Kids and I went out to Petsmart to look around as I wanted another snail to put in the 10 gallon, since the 2 in the 5 gallon are doing SUCH a great job cleaning up after the frogs. I chose a blue mystery snail and he's beautiful! I also talked myself into a powder blue dwarf gourami. Please don't yell at me! I just keep looking at them and loving them and I bought the smallest one possible, he's barely more than an inch long and we're totally setting up the bigger tanks on the next payday which is less than 2 weeks away!

Anyway, so brought my two blue babies home and floated them and all that and had them in the tank and everyone was checking each other out and all. The betta and the gourami both did some fin flaring and puffing at each other and then went in opposite directions and settled down. The blue snail actually came right out and started crawling around almost immediately! I took that as a good sign.

I asked hubby to watch the boys so I could come in here and check email and the board. Next thing I know, I hear my husband saying "ADEN! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? YOUR MOTHER IS NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY WITH YOU!" And I'm going OMG, I don't want to know. Hubby is calling me in there going "honey, honey, honeeeyyyy" and I'm going "I don't want to know!" and he's like, yes you do, get in here. SO I see what has happened. First I just saw the kitchen counter was covered in fish flakes. Then, I noticed the tank water, which had been crystal clear not 15 minutes earlier when I last left the kitchen was suddenly all cloudy. Then I saw that the bottom of the tank, all the fake plants and rocks are covered in orange fish flakes. Commence freak out. :22_yikes:

I seriously almost started crying. I gave said 3 year old a lecture and sent him out of the kitchen. Told hubby he'd better get them both out of the house because I have to take care of my fish now and I'm unavailable till further notice. SO I took out approximately 60% of the water, maybe even 75%, took out all the decorations. Moved the 2 guppies and 1 of the mollies over to the other tank. I didn't move everyone, but figured it'd be easier to clean up with less fish in there. Rinsed off all the decorations. Shoveled out the top layer of gravel with the fish net and skimmed out as much flakes as I could and rinsed all that gravel to get rid of as much food as possible. Replaced the gravel, rearranged the furniture a bit, and refilled with water with aquarium salt, stress zyme and stress coat, per all directions.

So now the water is still super cloudy. I think I got as much out as I possibly could without taking out ALL the gravel. I put the molly back in, but left the 2 guppies in the 5 gallon for now. I may just leave them there. I understand they're quite good for my frogs. :lol2: I figured more fish would just make it harder to filter off all that excess. What else can I do to help? Will my fish be okay?

Should I do another water change in the morning? I'll test the water in the morning of course. I was SO happy to have gotten my ammonia all the way down and now this! GAH!

ETA: normally the fish food is locked up. I had just given everyone a bite to eat and forgot to lock the cabinet back. :(

keep doing as many water changes as it takes.. i would test again in about an hour.. and possible do another water change before bed if needed.

I would just take all the decorations out, do a water change with gravel vac, and clean off the decorations.

should get most / all of it out.

Test your levels tommorow, youve gotten as much out as you can and that is good. Just check your levels and do water changes as necessary, the same way you did when you were cycling, keep your filter media rinsed to keep the flakes from sitting in there and rotting.

FWIW, my girl did the exact same thing when she was three. She was really cute about it "mommy I fed the fish!" . I lectured her as well, then cleaned the tank. She was so cute about it that I couldnt punish her, just explained to her on her level why she couldnt do that. Kids dont knwo any better, things happen... Same as you, if I had of put the food up where it belonged, it would have never happened...

sorry this happened....i have two young children adn they are constantly begging to feed the fish, I have found that if I give them the appropriate pinch size of food for them to feed, they lose interest in feeding all the time. Every night my two youngest get to pick a tank to feed (the amount I give them) and they are happy. I also explained to them that fish have small tummies and the amount of food is very small that they need. It has worked for me...in fact my oldest (10) is now begging for a tank of his own and drilling me about the nitrogen cycle. As for your water quality dilemma, water changes, water changes tedious water changes. It will be okay.

Great story :) Slap on another filter if you got to speed up the process. I normally don't read a loooong post but read every word you typed.

hehe, thank you damon! I'll take that as a compliment. I thought about an extra filter, but I don't have a spare yet. I've rinsed the filter pad a couple of times now and I did do another water change, probably only about 30% this time. I tested the water before that change and the ammonia was back up, but not as high as it had been the last couple of days. I'll do another change in the morning. I keep wanting to go check on everyone. I'm turning on a light across the room from them so I don't bother them too much. All I can tell is that no one is floating upside down and the cories are very busy. I hope they don't eat themselves into a stupor.

Oh and I am teaching them both about feeding the fish and small tummies and all that. I let them each get a small pinch of food out themselves and make sure it actually is very small and then they get to put it in. My 3 year old is a very precocious and mischievous little boy. He's really bright, and he uses it to get into things and do things he knows he shouldn't be doing. I think he really does know better, but it's that whole impulse control thing that they have at this age. They just have to find out what will happen if they do whatever it is. Or maybe he just thinks I'm not giving them enough. Who knows what goes thru the mind of a 3 year old?

Anyhoo, I'll keep you posted how things go in the morning!

I have a 3 year old, too, who loves to feed the fish. I've been measuring it out into the lid and he dumps or counts it (betta gets betta nuggets). We've had fish for 4 months now, and so far so good, he's been listening to the little tummies speech, but he's a little too interested in the one container with this weird sliding lid. I'm going to have to put them up somewhere he can't reach, but still gotta figure out a place that would be handy.

We have 5 fish tanks scattered around the house and I am thinking after reading this post, I'd better make sure all the fish food is put away before we have our holiday get togethers this year with lots of darling little toddlers coming! LOL! they will love the fish and I've been looking forward to showing them off, I'm sure but I am glad to read this- gave me a heads up- mine are older now-12 and 16, and I had to smile when I read your story- but I don't blame you for nearly crying!!! It reminded me so much of mine when they were young! I think your fishies will be fine. I also think it's great your kiddos are so interested in them- it will be a funny story to tell when they are older!LOL!
