30 day update on AC 110 horizonral filter MOD

As some my know a month ago I modified my AC 110 and 70 filters to filter water horizontally with twice the surface area because I got tired of the AC filter design which IMO insufficiently tries to force water from the bottom of a sponge that is too thick (4") when only the first inch is critical in filtering. After only a week the sponge would start to be forced upward lifting the lid and leaning up against the drywall leaking water and bypassing unless the filter was cleaned, also difficult as its thickness made it hard to clean out dirt migrating toward the center.

As in my original AC filter MOD thread rather then two big block sponges with surface area only on the bottom, I split 1 sponge down the middle of its length exactly in half. Then I stack the two halves toward the front of the filter so that there is twice the surface area of sponge exposed to the water. Plastic straws are used in front between the front plastic housing and the sponge face to provide a 1/8 inch gap for exit water that is filtered. Water from the pump now free flows unrestricted through the open grates to form the new reservoir of water behind the 2X large surface area filter sponge. This reservoir applies hydraulic pressure to hold the sponge in place forward position forcing water horizontally with hydraulic water weight pressure (like a dam) rather then like before from the bottom using only pump pressure. The reservoir's hydraulic weight does most of the grunt work while the pump only provides water to the reservoir under minimum load. A dam is also created with a spillway at the top of the sponge which is still 1/2 inch lower then the plastic tank encase both sponges were to get completely clogged.

After running this MOD for 30 days without any maintenance or loss in performance I had almost forgotten about maintenance and filter quality is much better not having to once clean or adjust the filter in 30 days. In fact today when I thought for the first time the filter flow had slowed to a trickle, after cleaning the filters the filter was still at a trickle because there was an obstruction in the pickup tube strainer which had actually caused the clogged trickle and not the filter sponge filters which it turned out I did not have to clean LOL, perhaps for another month.

The MOD is truly quite a remarkable improvement, so much so Iv decided not to sell my AC 110 and 70 which I received free as part of a craiglist tank buy, they have become true work horses now without the high maintenance and sponge pushups.

Do you use any ceramic biomedia? Or any other media?

Yes but not usually. That is to say before I received my Ebay canister filter to hold exotic basket medias and was still using this MOD I placed carbon in a narrow nylon bag and placed it standing up in the center of the reservoir so as not to obstruct all the water flow through the grates. Still worked great considering that a sponge filter by itself once established provides excellent BIO and mechanical filtration, only a vertical carbon bag was needed for chemical filtration. And while I realize there are many exotic alternatives to BIO filtration because I use some of them (home made), the differences as to what nitrifying bacteria prefer is minuscule in the real scheme of things.

will this mod work with the addition of floss pad as i find these sponges inadequate on taking out the stuff floss can., as i use floss and sponges to remove dissolved organics from the water column as the floss gets real gunky way before the sponge so that means the sponge is letting much of the dissolved mulm back in to the tank,..

Excellent idea and I'm impressed. I've had the same problem with those big 4" sponges floating up because they clog so fast, mainly in my Plec tank.
A few questions though-AQ110's normally come with that bag of media stones which I've got sitting on top of those 4" sponges. Instead of taking them out-do you suppose I could put that bag of stones in front of the sponges in place of the straws? I'm not exactly sure how you've got your straws. Just a few of them standing up? Or laying down? Or what?
That's a great idea and I appreciate you posting it.

I would like to think that you have an alternative canister filter you use for polishing like one of your Magnums. However if the AC 110 was my only filter I had and my relatives were coming over for a visit, to show off the tank as best as possible I would either wrap the two stacked sponges in flat poly blanket, or I would place very lose, puffed out, to the consistency of spider webbing, poly wool into the reservoir. I do this in my Hot Mag basket and it works wonders without clogging. Matting and packing is the enemy.

The reason why you cannot exceed 1/8 inch between the front of the AC tank and the sponge is because beyond that you will expose the bottom and side grate holes where water flow will bypass the filter getting in front of the sponge instead of flowing though it. However having said that I have considered a further MOD that would silicone shut the rows of honeycomb grate holes along the front bottom and sides of the strainer basket up to and no more then 10%. This allowing you enough additional room in front for finer media such as a poly polishing blanket without grate bypass. In any event you would never put more porous material in front only finer. The reservoir from where the water is pushing would be the place to put aggregate size media like the carbon bag mentioned, provided that it does not block more then 30% of the grate and volume of water and must stand vertical in the center of the reservoir, otherwise the MOD loses its hydraulic effect on the sponge. The straws take the place of a forward grate and can be adjusted without turning off the filter. Rocks used to take place of the straws or a grate would bee too massive, displacing the reservoir which is so important.

That's exactly why I've treated the ac's in the same manner people treat their upflow canisters, you just stack the media coarser to finer, bottom up, in mine I have the bio>sponge>floss and it works great, and does not impead the flow, I only clean when I see that the floss is turning brown.

It's just too bulky having the media stone bag in there, you're right. I've modified 2 of my AC110's like yours so far, 6 to go. I really like it this way a lot better. I've got multiple AC110's along with FX5's on tanks bigger than 100 g so there's no lack of biological filtration. It's always been mechanical filtration I've needed (Oscars and Plecs). So this idea of yours is wonderful. It actually increases biological also because you've got twice the surface area of the sponges. Considerable stronger flow with less work for the pump. I'd say you're officially a genius

Yup. This MOD is definitely not for everyone as this MOD was inspired for longer term low maintenance, consistent longer term high performance without the filter acting on its own by lifting the media basket and spilling water.

Ksane-genius me LOL?

Well the basic concept was developed years ago by evidence of all other modern HOB filters which use cartridges. The only difference being is that the AC110 has a much better filter (sponge), much more powerful motor, and much more potential being so huge. I just wanted to exploit an already used design in this big filter which IMO was crying out for help.
