30 day update on AC 110 horizonral filter MOD

I saw this a while back in your personal gallery and meant to message you. I have the ac50 and its starting to get pretty old(and the motor is missing an impellor). Any idea how I could do the same thing on that?

Well first things first right. Buy and install a new impeller and shaft (if needed) and then figure out if you'll need to cut one sponge in half and stack it to create the reservoir as required on the AC 110, or just turn two sponges sideways and stack them like was required on the AC 70. I'm only familiar with the AC 70 and 110, I don't know what the AC 50 sponge to reservoir size configuration is to make it work.

But one thing I forgot to mention to everyone that read this thread. This MOD is so noninvasive and simple affecting only the sponge, that trying it requires no commitment other then a sponge configuration that even though cut in half can still be re-stacked in the old configuration. So really its nothing more then a media option to increase efficiency and an alternative to lift lid problems.

I'm actually surprised Hagen didn't repackage the AC series with new sponge configuration and instructions and call it the AC horizon series 2X filter.

i was thinking of making my own clamshell to hold floss only and forgo the sponges,.. just like the regular hob,.. perhaps crafting mesh, to use instead of sponges or with them,.. and filter floss batting,.. feasible?

Sure. Just remember you have to make sure you don't allow open grate holes forward of whatever media support your using unless you silicone them shut on the front bottom and front sides, no more then 3 rows I would say. The water needs to be forced to go through the media so watch those forward grate holes. If all you want to do is polish a little the floss doesn't have to cover the entire sponge, I would just spider-web some floss in the reservoir, amazing what that snuff picks up when very lightly packed (like smoke).

Wow I missed this AC 20 MOD which fit right in this thread. Sorry you couldn't use your other media like carbon but one could always buy carbon sponge and get double duty. I like everything you did and hope that there is a way we can figure out how to get the polishing media on the other side of the sponge where it belongs. Perhaps using stiff woven polishing pad material I have seen in some canisters.

Thanks so very much dixienut for sharing your DIY and taking a chance on something different. If it doesn't work out for you simply flip the sponges back to their original configuration, but I hope it does work better for you as it has for me.

I have already talked about all the benefits of this DIY but one I did not mention is the ease at which you can remove and add sponges without having to lift the entire basket out.
